Weeknote 1 - 2026-07-03

This is the first weeknote of what I hope will be a long series of weeknotes.

Weeknotes are often used in teams to reflect and communicate how a team is progressing.

I am just one person.

My intent with the weeknotes is to reflect on the past week, have a little journal of what I’ve been up to, and how I am doing.

I’ve been setting up my homelab. I have an old raspberry pi and laptop on which I’ve installed kubernetes (k3s, specifically). I’ve set up argocd to manage apps with gitops. My hugo blog will auto-deploy whenever I push to github (via a github action), and also a couple minutes after 0500 and 1700 UTC, to build any scheduled posts.

I’ve also been finding lots of other blogs, and adding them to Miniflux which I’m also self-hosting on my homelab, and reading via Netflux.

I’m very much enjoying Derek Sivers’ blog.

I first set up the homelab because I wanted a place to run a CI/CD jenkins pipeline for projects. I should get back to setting that up, I have a project I want to get started.

I’m on-call with work this week. I hate it.

The need to be able to respond to a pager alert within a few minutes puts me on house arrest.

I could probably be a little bit more relaxed about it, but I find that difficult.

My productivity at work definitely drops during my on-call periods.

Eloise and I went to Rudyard Kipling’s home at Bateman’s last weekend. The house was interesting. Old. I don’t think I’d want to live in it, but the exhibits the National Trust had put in, detailing the life of the The Jungle Book author, were great.

The grounds were really nice. The perfect size, if I had enough money, for a private residence.

The water mill was a cool feature. We bought some flour, and will make some bread at the weekend.

I finished Tess of the D’Urbervilles on Sunday. I sobbed.

I will read more Hardy in the future.

I ran a 10k a couple of weekends ago, and haven’t ran since.

A combination of heatwave, working in the office, and being on-call have made it hard.

I will try to get on the treadmill this weekend.

I’ve forgotten to do my gratitude journalling this week.

I will put my journal on top of my bedside table so that I see it when I go to bed.

Finally, I’ve also been quite deeply involved in my laptop the past few evenings.

I will put it away for a bit.
