Book Review: The Signal and the Noise — Nate Silver

The Signal and the Noise is a pretty dense book. Not dense as in hard to read, but physically dense. Very small font, and a lot of it. It took me a while to get through.

That said, I found it very interesting, and well considered. Silver didn’t make any wild claims that he couldn’t or weren’t backed up with evidence.

It’s a good book for understanding forecasting and prediction, and how to think about probability.

Silver teaches Bayesian probability in a way that lets you apply it to your own life, and what probabilities really mean when you see them in the real world.

The book covers a myriad of topics, from baseball to poker, financial crisis to earthquakes, and never lingers for too long that you get bored.

A solid mix of theory and application, I enjoyed reading it and think it would interest anyone with a mathematical side.
