Am I Qualified?
When being given a promotion into a new role for the first time, it’s common to find oneself asking “Am I qualified for this?”.
There are essentially two reasons someone gets a promotion.
The first is that they have been doing the role for a while, and have been doing it well. The promotion is just a title change, recognising the work that they have already been doing.
In this scenario, you are qualified for the role. You have the experience and the skills, and have shown it.
The second scenario is that you have been promoted into a role that is new to you. You do not have the experience and maybe not all the skills necessary to excel in the new role.
So no, you are not qualified, but that doesn’t matter.
The people who promoted you into the role are willing to take the bet that you will be able to learn the role and gain the experience and skills necessary to become qualified.
Whether you are qualified for the role or not is immaterial. That you can learn and grow is what matters.
