On the 12th of June 2026, the US government required that Anthropic restrict access to all foreign nationals, both inside and outside of the United States.1
Anthropic, in their statement, say the US government referred to unspecific national security concerns.
As the power and ability of AI models grow, I foresee many governments attempting to restrict global access to the technologies.
Such efforts, however, would be shooting oneself in the foot.
AI companies require mammoth cash flows, and therefore a global user base. If a company can’t operate in one jurisdiction, they’ll take their money elsewhere.
How Anthropic and the US government proceed from here will be a story to watch.
